Is This Asia’s Next Mega-Port?

Quick Overview

Vietnam's Long Thanh International Airport, an $16 billion project spanning 5,000 hectares, aims to become a major regional hub, but it faces stiff competition from expanding mega-ports like Singapore's Changi, which is already the region's largest and is investing $10 billion more.

Key Points: Long Thanh Airport is an ambitious $16 billion project covering 5,000 hectares, more than four times the size of London's Heathrow. The primary driver for Long Thanh is to alleviate congestion at Tan Son Nhat Airport, which serves 40 million people annually and cannot expand due to its location within Ho Chi Minh City. Competitor Changi Airport in Singapore currently handles 60 million passengers yearly and is investing $10 billion into Terminal 5, aiming for a total capacity of 150 million by the mid-2030s. Other regional expansions include Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur International aiming for 100 million passengers, Thailand's Suvarnabhumi targeting 120 million, and the Philippines building a $14 billion Bulacan airport for 100 million. Phase 1 of Long Thanh will welcome 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually, with the final phase boosting capacity to 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo. Construction faced challenges, including uncovering numerous unexploded bombs and mines from the Vietnam War, and severe dust pollution affecting nearby residential areas up to 7 km away due to the red bassel soil. The design features four terminals inspired by the lotus flower, supported by a spectacular 82m clear span roof design, and will be connected to Ho Chi Minh City via road transformation and two planned rail lines.

Context: Southeast Asia is experiencing a massive surge in tourism, with Boeing predicting air traffic to the region will more than triple over the next 20 years, driving several countries to invest billions in building or expanding massive new airports, referred to as mega-ports, to handle the projected growth from both Western and emerging markets like China and India.
